Requirements
The Champalimaud Centre for the Unknown, inaugurated in Lisbon in October 2010 by the Champalimaud Foundation and opened by the President of Portugal, is a multidisciplinary centre that will strive to make crucial breakthroughs in cancer research. It is called the Centre for the Unknown because it lies on an historic site in Lisbon port where Portuguese explorers would set sail from, into the unknown. This symbolises the quest for knowledge that is now represented by Champalimaud’s search for cancer cures. The facility will provide the very best conditions to attract and retain the best researchers, academics and medical doctors from all over the world in the fields of neuroscience and oncology and is therefore constructed to the very highest specifications.
Solution
The Centre includes laboratories for basic clinical research, an ambulatory care centre and a vivarium, in all of which are installed Dortek’s hygienic door systems – both sliding and hinged, fire rated and non fire rated, automatic and manual.
The aesthetics of the centre are fabulous in that a public area comprising gardens and an open air theatre facing the river run next to the auditorium, exhibition area, restaurant and offices which in turn lie adjacent to the diagnostic and treatment units and basic research laboratories.
Dortek’s hygienic glass reinforced polyester (GRP) doors fit the demanding requirements of such a state of the art facility, where clinical research and teaching necessitate the very highest standards of hygiene in order for the research programmes to succeed, as well as providing the cleanest environment possible for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological and cancer patients.
In addition to the above Dortek installed integral blinds and vistamatic windows in many of the doors for reasons of security and patient privacy.
