Requirements

The Hospital, which is the largest acute hospital in the region and the only level one trauma centre in the Republic of Ireland, opened its doors in November 1978 and has played a key role in the delivery of healthcare to people in Cork and across Munster for the last 30 years. CUH has developed significantly in recent years making it one of the busiest acute hospitals in the country. The exacting requirements of the hospital was for Dortek to remove existing hinged X-ray doors that were badly damaged from the constant traffic sustained in the day-to-day running of CUH. The intumescent fitted in the lead edge of each door leaf had been physically pulled out of the door. This meant the doors in situ negated the current fire ratings. Dortek was a natural choice being at the forefront of door technology and hygienic performance.

Solution

Dortek Ltd was selected by Cork University, our Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP) sliding doors were used as they have been developed and certified to form the current requirements of the client. The Dortek slider is certified to F60. The GRP door sets include 3mm of X-ray protection in the most critical areas. The new automated slider allowed staff to open the door and bring patients through without fighting against a door that was attempting to close. The Door was linked to the Xray machine so that when the “Room in Use” sign was activated, the doors would lock down. The newly refurbished theatre was the first of a series that are planned. The theatres were fitted with vision panels containing laser protection glass and blackout blinds. The blinds were sufficient to provide physical laser protection, and normal usage was that these would always be in place during operations; however, the hospital required a back-up, in case they were not lowered. This was provided by the laser screen attached inside the fire rated vision panel. The complete package of doors, automations interlocking, and vision panels were fully commissioned by Dortek engineers in 2010.
