imageThe purpose built school incorporates the latest ideas in dog care and welfare facilities from across the world.

Dortek are proud to be associated with the new national training centre for Guide Dogs for the Blind in Atherton, Lancashire. Officially opened in 2010 by HRH Princess Alexandra, the patron of guide dogs, this state of the art training facility replaces the previous 50 year old centre in Bolton.

The purpose built school incorporates the latest ideas in dog care and welfare facilities from across the world, it features and indoor all weather training area and an outdoor area featuring permanent street obstacles, essential for acclimatising trainee guide dogs to real world environments.

These new facilities will allow the training of more dogs, in better conditions, and at a lower cost than ever before. The direct result of this investment will be more dogs and more partnerships for blind and partially sighted people

Solution

Following the success of a familiar project in Forfar, Scotland in 2004, Dortek were invited to supply the same specification GRP doors in robust stainless steel frames to the majority of the internal masonry openings throughout the building.

Dortek products were again chosen because of their unique hygienic properties, and it’s ability to withstand rigorous cleaning regimes with no adverse effects in longevity and performance whilst maintaining modern, contemporary appearance.

The moulded GRP door leaf is impervious to water and will not swell, warp or twist, even under the most severe conditions and has an integral colour which requires no refurbishment, whilst being strong & durable yet lightweight, with less wear on hinges and door closers

The frames are a robust stainless steel wraparound type, designed to protect the walls from damage and featuring factory welded corners for greater strength and durability.

Following the success of this project, Dortek have since been appointed to supply similar doors for the brand new facility for the Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre in Leamington, Warwickshire. This project, which is of a similar scale to Atherton commenced in 2010 and is due for completion 2011.
