Glossary of Technical Terms
A short glossary of technical terms within the specialist door industry.
- ABSL – Animal Biosafety Level
- BS – British Standards fire testing for fire doors and shutters.
- BSL – Biosafety Level
- dB – Decibel is widely known as a measure of sound pressure level, but is also used for a wide variety of other measurements in science and engineering but prominently in acoustics.
- EN – European Norm fire resistance test for door sets.
- FDA – Food Drug Administration responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety, dietary supplements, pharmaceutical drugs (medications), vaccines, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and veterinary products.
- FRP – Fibre-reinforced polyester, also known as fibre-reinforced polymer. This is a reinforced fibre matrix saturated polyester fibres.
- GLP – Good laboratory practise a management system for laboratories/research orgnisation. Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) embodies a set of principles that provides a framework within which laboratory studies are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, reported and archived in accordance with OECD Test Guidelines (Orgonaisation of Economic Co-operation and Development)
- GMP – Good manufacturing practice a quality assurance system covering manufacture, production and quality control. These guidlines are outlined to ensure products meet the quality standards of their intended use and specification.
- GRP – Glass-reinforced polyester also known as GFRP Glass Fiber-Reinforced Plastic. The fiber reinforced polymer made of a plastic matrix reinforced by fine fibers made of glass.
- Hermetic Door – A door that is not air tight but nevertheless gives a very good seal. Often 90% + given the right wall and floor finish.
- Intumescent Strip – A substance which swells as a result of heat exposure that increases in volume for passive fire protection.
- ISPE – International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering a not-for-profit industry trade group for pharmaceutical science and manufacturing professionals.
- Pa – Pascal is the meausure of force per unit area.
- RIBA – Royal Institute of British Architects a professional body for architects in the United Kingdom.
