Mounts Baths, Northampton – Email Testimonial
Wednesday, July 25, 2018
Recognised by Historic England to be a particularly good example of a Modern Movement swimming pool. A series of dramatic arches span the swimming pool which was said on opening in 1936 to have “the dignity of a modern cathedral”. Large side windows let natural light flood the pool. The art deco influence is evident in the building, in particular the Turkish hot rooms which are vividly decorated in black and cream tiles. Additions to the building were made in the 1970s including the provision of a teaching pool.
Since our successful completion of Hygienic Doors installed at Mounts Baths in Northampton, Oliver Bazeley from PHP Architects has endorsed Dortek with an email testimonial…
“PHP Architects have worked closely with Dortek on this significant refurbishment project of Mounts Swimming Baths in Northampton. This Grade 2 Listed building, originally constructed in 1936, provides an unique example of the Art Deco style, particularly with its fine jointed ashlar façade and the iconic parabolic arch over the main swimming pool. We were involved in a complete re-design and remodelling of the wet-side changing rooms. Major works to remove walls, replace all cubicles and finishes has been undertaken whilst the pool continued to be used. The Client, Northampton Leisure Trust, wanted all elements to be robust and long-lasting which was a key factor in deciding to use the fully encapsulated Dortek doors and frames. The new design achieves a spacious and generous new ‘village’ style changing facility whilst respecting the Art Deco style using a subtle palette of white, grey and black colours. These works will allow this beautiful building to be enjoyed for generations to come.”
